USA Hockey announced that Mounds View Irondale Youth Hockey achieved Gold Status in Growth and Retention efforts. “We have grown our Mite and 8U levels every year the past five seasons,“ commented MVYHA President Tim Herold. “Growing the program and making youth hockey accessible to all is the most important thing we do as a community hockey organization. It is great to be recognized for our efforts.”

MVI participated in the 2 & 2 Challenge which is a national program that encourages associations to host a series of retention, acquisition and transition programs over the course of the season with the goal of growing youth hockey. The continued dedication of Minnesota's youth hockey associations to growing the game at youngest levels has led to a third consecutive year of growth and new state and national records at the 8 & Under (8U) level. The holistic approach taken by 2 & 2 Challenge participants helped Minnesota set a record with 6,918 first time players, while also increasing the number of retained players for the second straight year.

“We have had great participation in our Try Hockey Free and Learn Hockey Programs which has turned many first time players into Mites,” Herold said. “I would like to thank Tracy Henry at Irondale and Ted Koeppl our Recruitment Director for making growth a top priority.”

USA Hockey and Total Hockey have provided MVI with grant money and free equipment to promote first time hockey participants. MVI was one of 41 Minnesota Associations to receive Gold Status in recruitment and retention.
