(Blaine, MN)—The MVI Bantam AA club defeated an always tough Mahtomedi AA 5 to 2 in their final District Two game of the season. Goaltender Elijah Kaasa stopped 18 of 20 Zephyr shots for the win. The win brings the third seed for the club in the D2 playoffs later in February.
MVI got the board first with a rebound goal from winger Jake McAlpine in the first period. Quinton Peterson scored in the second after digging the puck out from behind the net and scoring on his own rebound. Later in the second, Stephen Golden scored on a beautiful pass from Nate Foley giving MVI a 3-0 lead. The Mahtomedi Zephyrs stuck back with two quick goals at the end of the second tightening the game to 3-2.
Henry Claridge extended the MVI lead to 4 to 2 scoring on a pass from Nate Foley. MVI closed the scoring with Stephen Golden added his second goal of the game connecting after a strong passing play from Quinton Peterson and George DeMay.
The MVI Bantam AA club plays Orono and Armstrong Cooper this upcoming week.
(Blaine, MN)—The Mounds View Irondale Bantam AA club defeated rival Centennial 2 to 1 at the Super Rink in Blaine. Goalie Elijah Kaasa stopped 15 of 16 Centennial shots for the victory.
Centennial got on the board in the first period with a power play goal. The Cougars held the lead until the last minute of the second period. Centennial picked up a late penalty to put MVI on the power play. MVI moved the puck effectively on the power play, George DeMay hit Griffin Bourassa with a behind the net pass and Griffin buried the puck for a 1-1 tie at the end of two.
The two clubs battled evenly in the third. Brian Taft hit Jake McAlpine on the right side. McAlpine found the back of the net with Ethan Elmes providing pressure on the goal. Kaasa made some strong saves in the third to preserve the win. MVI outshot Centennial 20-16.
The Irondale Hockey Team and Coach Adam Schmidt attended the game helped cheer MVI on to victory. The MVI Bantam AA club is coached by Nick Rounds, Aaron Frach, Tyler Harlan and John Albers.
Two Harbors, MN (January 15)—The MVI Bantam AA club defeated Proctor 5-1 in the Championship game of the North Shore Great Lakes Tournament. Nate Foley opened the scoring in the first period on a power play goal. Quinton Peterson (A-Claridge) followed with a goal late in the first period for a 2-0 lead. Henry Claridge (A-Foley) scored on the power play goal early in the second. George DeMay (A-Claridge) added another and Jake McAlpine closed out the scoring for a 5-1 final for MVI.
MVI allowed only two goals in three games behind the strong goaltending of Elijah Kaasa. The defensive team of Cale Goenner, John Rupert, Luke Morrisette, Joe Woldt, Brian Taft and Griffin Bourassa played excellent hockey and kept the opponents away from the net.
In the first round MVI defeated Neebing (Ont) 8-1 (Goals- DeMay (3), Rogers (2), Foley (2), McAlpine). In the semifinals, MVI downed North Shore 9-0 (Goals-Foley (3), Neururer, Golden, Morrisette, Peterson, DeMay, Rupert).
The MVI Bantam AA enjoys their longest winning streak of the year with five consecutive wins and brings some momentum into an important week ahead. MVI faces neighboring Centennial on Friday and D2 rival White Bear Lake on Sunday.
