PWC-Black continued its wild ride through the 2014-15 season with a consolation championship this past weekend at the Stillwater C Round-up. Number 1 Goaltender Johnny Ballot is still on Injured Reserve requiring the squad to use a carousel of 3 different net minders in route to their Consolation Championship.
Sunday’s Consolation Championship match-up between the Mustangs (12-13-2) and Anoka PWC (6-6-3 in D10 play) featured two teams with solid blue lines and goaltending. Both teams have struggled to put pucks in the back of the net recently though. MVI’s Sid Bork, on loan for the PWC-White team, outdueled his Anoka counterpart giving up only one goal on the way to a 3-1 victory.
Sunday’s game was a well-disciplined affair, worthy of Lady Byng consideration, compared to Saturday night’s match-up between PWC-Black and the Woodbury Royals (7-4-1 in D8 play). That game saw a variety of extra-curricular activities and a number of penalties. MVI held on for a 5-4 victory with Ian Dircks providing outstanding goaltending in the third period. Dircks, who normally plays first line minutes as a forward and is best known for his powerful slap shot, made a number of difficult stops in the third period despite playing the position with ill-fitting equipment.
In the first game of the tournament, MVI was barely edged by PWC powerhouse Bloomington Jefferson (72-2-3 (approx.)). The Mustangs hung with Jefferson’s speedy skaters for most of the game and the 5-0 final was not indicative of how well MVI played for stretches during the game.
Up Next: PWC-Black, again with on-loan goaltender Sid Bork between the pipes, plays Andover PWC (8-5-3 in D10 play) this Thursday in the final non-District game of the season. Andover leads the season series 1-0 after a 3-1 victory in December at the Andover Community Center.
On Monday, PWC-Black plays its first of three district games in 5 days against St. Mary's Pt PWC-Green (10-3-0 in D2 play). MVI’s regular goalie Johnny Ballot is expected to be healthy for that match-up.
