After placing 3rd and 2nd place in earlier tournaments this season, MVI PWB2 took home the 1st place trophy in last weekend's Silver Bay tourney. The Lancers won all 4 games including a thrilling 5-4 comeback versus a tough Wayzata team Saturday morning on the North Shore of Lake Superior.
Trailing 3-0 late into the 1st period, Lancer fans were getting restless until Zach Rogers found the back of the net giving them a bit of relief with 1:16 remaining. Declan Rodefeld made it 3-2 when he flipped the puck past the Wayzata net minder on a power play midway through the 2nd. The Lancers carried the momentum into the 3rd with a goal from Ike Mezzenga but less than 2 minutes later the Spartans took back the lead 4-3. Not to be denied, Zach Rogers tied it up 4-4 when he scored with 2:40 left assisted by Mezzenga.
Heading into overtime, defenseman Alex Smith had already broken up a number of Spartan scoring threats with help from Paul Dieckoff, Jason Grant and Mezzenga. Goalie Kai Fleming stopped 26 of 30 Trojan shots including two incredible saves in the 3rd period that helped keep the Lancers in the game.
OT began with both MVI and Wayzata fans on pins and needles, each hoping for a victorious outcome. Just over half way through, Mezzenga took the puck past center ice, deeking not one but two Spartan defenders then forced the goalie to go down flipping the puck over him into the net for the game winner.
The Lancers also defeated Tartan, North Shore and Coon Rapids over the weekend tourney to earn 1st place. MVI is 10-3 in January (17-13 overall) but will face 3 tough D2 opponents to finish the regular season. Head Coach Rob Hanson said he believes his team has the potential to win out if they continue to play as well as they have down the stretch.
